Additional Details

The author was a private in the 38th Alabama Infantry. Writing to his wife Carrie, Private Talbert expresses scorn for her brother Jack: "I can't say there is anything honorable in trying to get into government service, which he knows nothing about, simply to avoid conscription. It will tell on him in future years." If his wife was not distressed enough by that assessment, he continues with a rather graphic description of a camp prostitute, though he insists that "our company maintains its respectability."
